GORUCK Presents :: Tips to Building a Bomber Pack

While no bag is indestructible, a bomber or ‘bombproof’  pack comes close. Routinely built with mil-spec materials, construction of a bomber pack needs to be tough enough to handle repeated abuse in a host of onerous and, at times, unpredictable environments.

GORUCK have built their formidable reputation on creating some of the toughest bags in the game. Co-founded by a Green Beret, lugged by soldiers, and carried by thousands who endure their  GORUCK Challenge events, it’s plain to see they know what it takes to achieve the ‘bombproof’ stamp of approval. So we asked GORUCK to share their expertise on important elements that go into building their bomber packs…

Double Stitching

With our final seams and other areas of high pressure we employ two stitch passes. This means that you go around the seam two times. That way, if a stitch breaks, the bag will still hold. Two lines of stitching on top of each other gives added support, instead of one line of stitching that is easily broken.

Other brands might do this once because it’s quicker, but going around twice keeps the bag together for longer. These double seams occur around your panels. The back panel, twice around. The front panel, twice around. At the shoulder straps we do two seams at the toe so that your toe doesn’t split out. Our philosophy is two is one, one is none.

GORUCK

Bartacking

Bartacking is a specific style of stitching done on a specific machine. The bartacker is set up to create a certain pattern which helps to hold things in. Most of our seams have a certain stitch length where there might be seven or eight stitches in an inch. A bartack has 42 stitches in an inch. The stitches happen across and then come back through in vertical stitches to combine all those and make it super strong and tough. It’s used in small areas of high pressure such as MOLLE, thumb loops, batwings at the point of intersection for Cordura and webbing, handles at points of big pressure, as well as where the port might open. If you apply too much pressure the CORDURA will rip before the bartacking does. Think of your bartacks as your best line of defense for heavy carrying. Our material is bombproof. Our bartacks are even more bombproof.

“Our philosophy is two is one, one is none.”

Back Tacking

Shoulder straps are put in with the friend of bartacks which is back tacking. Back tacking is used because it’s a longer distance and because bartacking adds some thickness and we don’t want any more thickness on the shoulder straps than we already have. Back tacking involves sewing, stopping, backing up to where you were, continuing forward, backing up again, and continuing forward, allowing you to reinforce without adding bulk.

“Think of your bartacks as your best line of defense for heavy carrying.”

Seam Allowance and Stitch Length

Seam allowances and stitch lengths are adjustments that the operator can make to their machine to get the job done. Seam allowance is how far from the stitching to the edge of your material you perform the stitch at. We ask our machine operators to do this at 1cm. A good seam allowance will help to hold everything together without being too wimpy at the end or without being too deep and changing the look of the bag.

“Seam allowance is how far from the stitching to the edge of your material you perform the stitch at.”

The second part of that is stitch length. Too big and dirt can pass between the stitches and things can break; you’ve got an area that doesn’t have something holding it together. Too tight of a stitch length and you will actually perforate as you go, separating materials and losing them. We do seven to eight stitches per inch, a perfect amount to keep things neat and tight and to hold everything in place without ripping and without allowing dirt to pass through.

Some brands will cut corners in both of these steps. The seam allowance can be difficult to maintain because of thicknesses, or the machine doesn’t want to do it. Some brands will just let the machine dictate it because it’s faster and cheaper. The same thing with the stitch length. A larger stitch length lets you sew faster. We don’t do that. We are not about speed, we’re about quality.

GORUCK

Shoulder Strap Foam

When you are rucking, the shoulder straps take the majority of the weight, so we spend extra on the best foam on the market. The shoulder straps are the most intimate part on your bag. They hug you, they make the connection with you. Your back is on the panel but your shoulder straps do the work. You don’t want foam that will compress over time and reduce the comfort of the straps. When you pinch our strap foam it gives you a little bit of resistance and maintains that foam feel. We spent a lot of time looking for the perfect foam. This foam is not only multilayered for basic purposes and longevity, but we also make sure that it is the best foam out there for what we expect it to do. This foam is going to last you a lifetime.

“We are not about speed, we’re about quality.”

GORUCK

False Bottom

One of the best things about our bombproof laptop compartment is the false bottom. Of course we know there’s a framesheet, good foam, all kinds of things to protect your laptop. But we make sure your laptop is well taken care of by including that false bottom which provides some space between the actual bottom of the laptop compartment and the floor. If you drop the bag, the laptop doesn’t make contact with the surface it has fallen onto. Now this construction is time-consuming, it is difficult, it is an extra overbuild step that many people might not care to do, but we’re going to get it done because we want to make sure that your belongings are well taken care of.

“One of the best things about our bombproof laptop compartment is the false bottom.”

We proudly overbuild all of our gear. We want it to last for you; we’re proud of what we’ve done and who we are. We don’t view overbuilding as a cost, we view it as an investment.

EVERGOODS :: Rumblings from Bozeman

EVERGOODS is a brand you’ve never heard of, but that’s soon to change. It’s building as we speak, in a quiet corner of Bozeman, Montana. At the helm, two men well-versed in the world of great carry: Jack Barley, co-founder of GORUCK, and Kevin Dee, a master designer and the genius behind some of Patagonia’s most beloved projects.

The two, the visionary and the perfectionist, have set their sights on redefining what the all-day category represents with only one guiding principle: to be completely product and development driven. No red tape. No corporate agenda. Just the product. HQ sat me down with them to chat about the philosophies behind their new endeavor and the noble approach they’re taking to designing the future of cross-over equipment.

EVERGOODS

I can feel the mountains outside the windows of their Bozeman, MT workshop. Jack apologizes for being short of breath. He’s just finished a business hike spanning five miles of Montana’s finest—how quintessentially Bozeman. He slings a prototype off his shoulder, and we begin.

EVERGOODS

Blue light lingers outside the office where Kevin and Jack sit. They rented this empty warehouse space and built every piece of furniture so they could work in a way that suits them. I understand that particularity as I look at them. Barley, bespectacled, sitting forward in his office chair, his enthusiasm transferred into constant movement. Dee, farther away from the monitor, is more relaxed, perhaps reserved even. You can nearly hear the gears turning. They wear plain clothing, but speak, at times, like physicists.

Barley arrived at EVERGOODS by way of GORUCK, where he co-founded the brand and managed the young start-up’s design team that delivered the new standard of bomber bags: what we know today as the GR1. Meanwhile, Kevin Dee was busy in the R&D lab over at Patagonia pushing material and construction until he left for private contract ventures, where only after his leaving did some of his work trickle into the High Alpine Kit. You ever open an Ascensionist? Yeah—Kevin designed that mechanism. Their new titles are well deserved. Barley is CEO and Dee is Head of Product and R&D, but things can get a little fuzzy when it’s only a two-man show and there’s a lot of shared responsibility.

“Barley arrived at EVERGOODS by way of GORUCK, where he co-founded the brand and managed the young start-up’s design team that delivered the new standard of bomber bags: what we know today as the GR1.”

As we chat, the two are excited, on the cusp of launching their new brand. Jack tells me that they’re simply here to do one thing: make the best bags they can – that’s the only goal on their board.

EVERGOODS

While I can’t tell you too much about their new packs just yet, I can say they address the all-day category. As Barley explained, “Once you step out your front door, you’re outside.” And that’s what these bags are dialed for. Urban. Active. Outdoor. Each bag will have its own prowess but be equally adept at its siblings’ forte. What excites me most as a consumer is that these guys are talking long game—confidently. Jack explained, “Part of the reason we want to be in business together is that we wanted to be completely product and development driven. We want to build a foundation of that knowledge, so that ten years from now, who knows what we’ll be capable of.”

“Urban. Active. Outdoor. Each bag will have its own prowess but be equally adept at its siblings’ forte.”

Barley and Dee’s partnership in EVERGOODS is about them coming together to make something that neither of them could do alone. Dee is all in. According to him, “The kind of product I want to make is going to take a guy like Jack to get it to the finish line.” He goes on, “I’m excited because I feel like I get to work with a marketing, strategy, business person who is very keyed into the product, and that we’re going to make good product together. It’s about me aligning myself with someone who will make that possible in a way that I think is significant.”

“Barley and Dee’s partnership in EVERGOODS is about them coming together to make something that neither of them could do alone.”

EVERGOODS

In a very yin and yang sense, Barley and Dee are in this because they need each other. While working with two of the biggest brands in the game, they’d never really had the creative opportunity to produce something entirely their own. Both of these guys believe that the product should come first and allow that to inform every other aspect of the business. Barley says, “We work well together because I am absolutely sensitive to and inspired and in awe of process and development as it relates to product and research and development.” And he’s got a business plan to back that up; a portion of each sale gets kicked into the R&D fund so they can let that drive their future projects. “We want to work together…so that the product and the development does drive everything,” says Barley.

EVERGOODS

And that’s refreshing. EVERGOODS is—uncompromisingly—product driven. You don’t get that so often these days with the business decisions being made on a different floor from the studio. That’s not the case with EVERGOODS. “I think what is important is that there is a kind of product and a way of working/developing that is important to Kevin and me. It is not for us to say our way is any better or the only way, but to say this is how we do it, and this is why we do it this way,” Barley wrote to me later.

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.
EVERGOODS

What way is that exactly? Well, the conceptualization for each project starts with them working together. Dee says, “When it comes to product development, when you really get into it, there’s a million and one decisions to make and none of these decisions have a clear right or wrong yes or no answer. They’re just sort of pros and cons and they have to balance out…” He continues, “It’s very delicate and we have to interact and discuss a lot.”

“It is not for us to say our way is any better or the only way, but to say this is how we do it, and this is why we do it this way…”

When an idea does make it to the development stage, Dee, with his uniquely broad skill set: a degree in sculpture, a self-taught seamster, and master designer, begins patterning out these visions and assembles them to scale, making sure that each face and curve are perfect before ever cutting a single piece of fabric. One of Dee’s greatest strengths is that he plays on both sides of the design/manufacturing process. “We sew all our prototypes in-house, so we can leverage shape and pattern and material toward the end goal, where designers more separated from the sewing can only go so far,” explains Dee.

If the mock-up doesn’t pass their strict aesthetic standards, it gets tossed, and there’s a pile of paper models sitting in the corner of the shop to prove it.  They don’t represent failure though, they’re valuable learning as Barley says, “Here’s the beauty of that—you haven’t lost time. You might have to back out and then move forward, but I feel like there are these nuggets of gold that you discover and keep. You’re creating this treasure chest of mistakes and discoveries that become eternally at your possession and disposal for subsequent projects.”

Barley and Dee build off each other for a moment longer, collaborating even in their responses. Barley says, “I think we bonded, like he wants to work that way but he also wants it to be interactive and collaborative.” He speaks with his hands to punctuate the steps of the process, “We are checking in on this stuff like every step of the way.”

“Absolutely,” Dee picks up, “that’s why Jack’s a good fit, because he’s kind of visionary, kind of business guy, but he gives a shit about the product. So many of the business guys, the visionary guys, just don’t have a clue and they don’t care about—”

“—how it goes together!” Barley more excited now cuts in, “or what the problems are, or what it is to make product like that! I want to understand it as much as I can so that when I engage with them [designers], I deserve to have that conversation.”

“You’re creating this treasure chest of mistakes and discoveries that become eternally at your possession and disposal for subsequent projects.”

As we wrap up, I can’t help but admire the fact that these guys decided to turn this vision into a reality. That’s always the most profound thing, to meet someone, listen to them tell you their dreams, and watch them do whatever it takes to make it happen. “The goal is for us to get to do the kind of work that we want to do on our terms. That’s why we’re working together, and I’m most proud of us marching toward that.” Barley tempers his emotions and reels back into his seat.

I ask about their products, one last time, a little nudge you’d call it, and Dee and Barley can’t wait any longer. Stoke level: Rocket ship. They pull out two of the three bags they’re releasing next year and give me the rundown. They’re just what you’d imagine— sleek and refined, for town and country and everything in between. Their five-year calendar, methodically color-coordinated on the white board behind them, subtly stakes its claim. EVERGOODS are coming. And when they arrive, I imagine they’ll be here to stay.

The Best Backpacks for One-Bag Travel

Travel varies for all of us. Some of us dart back and forth across the globe in short bursts for business. Others seek out adventure and travel far and wide for months or even years on end. Some of us do a little of both. But when churning over that one-bag travel backpack to be your companion, five key considerations always spring up.

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.
Outlier

Weight

The lighter a bag is, the less strain there is on your body. You won’t tire as quickly, you’ll be inclined to explore further, and you’ll enjoy the general traveling experience more. Not to mention shedding carry weight helps you avoid overweight baggage fees.

Something to bear in mind though is that lightweight materials can also be expensive, so you may have to pay more for a bag that cuts weight but stills offers reliable durability. While finding a lightweight bag will help you reduce carry weight, it’s also good practice to try and pack less if you can. Every little helps!

Comfort

The more comfortable your bag is, the happier you’ll be. Traveling is tiring enough without adding an uncomfortable bag to the mix. However, the level of comfort you need will depend on your intended travel. If you’ll be on the go for a long time, have a lot to carry, or will be doing outdoor-type trips, a comfortable backpack with good suspension is important.

Try to look for a bag with a hip belt, great harness and load stabilizing shoulder straps to help with the load and transfer carry weight to your hips. Lighter loads and shorter travel distances however allow for more carry flexibility, and if you need to you can compromise on comfort a bit for other features that are more useful to your needs. It’s always good to try before you buy, so if possible go into a local store and try on different bags to see which ones feel right for you.

Packability and access

This is how easy you can get stuff in and take stuff out. You want to be able to access specific items without having to unpack a lot of your gear in the process. And it’s nice to be able to pack your gear into your pack quickly and smoothly when preparing to skip to new locales.

So consider how the bag opens (for example is it a top-loader, clamshell-style, etc.) and whether it’s right for you. Does it offer easy-access pockets for frequently used items? Do you require a lot of organization? Perhaps you need to keep business and personal items separate? Do you need compression options? These are all useful questions to consider when deciding whether a travel bag is suitable for your requirements.

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.
goruck gr2

Durability

Travel can be demanding. Your bag may encounter rough terrain or wet weather, but there’s also the strain of being wedged into tight spaces such as overhead luggage bins, or having to endure unforgiving baggage carousels. Plus general wear and tear. The more durable a bag is, the more punishment it will be able to withstand.

However, greater durability can sometimes come at the cost of greater weight, so you’ll need to decide whether durability or weight is a priority. Your travel activities will also dictate the level of durability you need, for instance short business travel trips (where your bag is unlikely to encounter a lot of demanding environments) versus multi-week outdoor adventures.

Versatility

As with all of the considerations above, the degree of versatility you require in your carry will depend on its intended use. You may want to mix outdoor and urban travel, in which case your bag will need to be able to handle diverse environments. Perhaps you want the flexibility to carry a variety of loads, so a bag with expandability features could be a good fit. Organization and aesthetics are also important here. For example you may want a business bag that looks the part, keeps your work and personal items separate, and can be carried in a variety of ways for easy movement outside of work settings.

Now that you’ve got some key considerations in mind, here are a few of our top picks to suit a wide range of one-bag travel needs.

Beginner’s Guide to Tactical EDC Backpacks

What makes a Tactical EDC Backpack…”Tactical”?

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.
goruck-pack---guide-to-tactical-backpacks

You’ve heard the term before; tactical backpack.  It’s hard to avoid, in fact.  It’s impossible to deny that “tactical” packs are a trend that isn’t going away any time soon in the carry world.  In fact, at this point it may not even be a trend, but one of the pillar groups.  How did this happen?  Well, as long as there has been military, there have been people who want to use the gear for their civilian lives (the common day tshirt is a perfect example of gear popularized by military design and use).  And just to be clear, civilians using military gear is awesome.  As long as you’re not going around claiming you’re a soldier when you’re not.  That’s not cool.  Otherwise, feel free to enjoy the benefits of these awesome packs and gear.  In one way or another, you’ve already paid for them via taxes!

People are drawn to this rugged gear for good reason too.  Packs, clothing, and kit that is designed specifically for armed forces are all meant to go to war.  Literally.  They’re focused on strength, durability, modularity, high activity, and premium quality materials/hardware.  Fashion is not even considered.  It’s all pure function here.  That being said, some may think tactical packs are a bit loud/attention grabbing, so they’ll want something a bit more subdued.  Everyone has their own preferences, which we dig.

Long story short, in this particular case the term “tactical” is essentially another word for “military” or “military inspired”.

As the title states, this is a breakdown of Tactical EDC Packs for beginners.  An introduction.  So let’s dig in and explore what makes one functional tactical pack great versus a cheap knock-off for fashion’s sake.

Authentic (military surplus) is best, right?

The military uses this actual pack in combat, so the real deal must be the best, right?  Not necessarily.

Photo by Senior Airman Tryphena Mayhugh

Yes, *actual* military packs are awesome for a lot of reasons.  But sometimes other brands and design teams do it better.  One issue is that these original packs are indeed actually made for war.  They’re made to fit an M18A1 Claymore Mine or a Single Channel Ground and Airborne Radio System (SINCGARS)…probably not necessary for your run to the coffee shop or even a Tough Mudder race.  These packs probably don’t have a pocket for your iPhone 26 or your VR headset for your pet Samsquamch.

Not to mention, we all know how cheap the government can be.  Government runs the armed forces.  They write the checks for the gear.  Sometimes they’ll cut corners (imagine that), and use heavier material, cheaper hardware, etc.  Sometimes it just isn’t possible to make something as nice as it should/could be, because they need to make 20 million units of them versus 200 units.

WWI-map-case---guide-to-tactical-backpacks

I own a lot of military surplus packs from various timeframes.  One of my favorite packs in my collection is a WWII era backpack made in Switzerland for Swiss soldiers. The material is still rainproof today.  While it might be heavy and clunky, it was ultralight back in its time (and there are a few examples of this pack that are actually made out of Swiss pony fur, for wintertime warfare).  Another favorite is an old leather WWI map case.  And there’s just something about the East German “rain camo” fabric used on a couple of vintage packs I own.

Guide to tactical backpacks

These packs are all cool and I can adapt my gear to fit into all of them, which is fine, but not ideal.  Generally they’re too big, as they’re meant to carry a lot of gear into the field.  They’re too heavy, since soldiers are usually young men/women in peak physical shape.  Etc.  Long story short, authentic is not always best.  So let’s see what to look for when hunting down your new Tactical EDC Pack.

What to Look for in a Tactical Backpack?

Materials:

We’re material geeks over here.  And generally military tactical packs all should be made from quality fabrics that can take a beating.  As a general rule of thumb, they should be made from 500D – 1200D CORDURA nylon fabric (or better).  Not 200D.  Not Kodra.  Not polyester.  This is an easy one.  Some packs may even use nicer materials, such as X-Pac (VX) fabric.  Usually these fabrics are heavier (not always), but they’re weather resistant and take a fall down a mountain or twenty.

Zippers/Hardware:

Look for brand names listed in the pack’s specifications.  Brands to look for are YKK, TiZip, ITW Nexus, AustriAlpin, and more.  If you haven’t heard of the brand (or if it’s intentionally left off), it probably doesn’t have a reputation of having a great track record.  These parts can make or break (literally) a pack, so you’ll want something you can trust.  If you’re deep in the wilderness and a buckle that keeps your shoulder straps attached busts on you, you’re out of luck.

Construction:

This one is tough.  Anyone can say “built tough” or “high-quality construction”.  But these details can be hidden away from the untrained eye.  What this really means might be “brand reputation”.  If you’re able to find out what kind of thread they’re using, search for nylon thread.  And look for brands that are using a solid third party factory or have their own factory under their own roof.  All of this information isn’t normally quite public, so the best bet here is to dig through reviews on our site and other websites that can help you learn more about the products and brand’s reputation for quality.  Take all reviews with a grain of salt, as you’re well aware.  Lastly, a solid warranty never hurts!

Modularity:

One of the things that makes a pack visually scream “tactical” is the MOLLE webbing (and in some cases, laser cut fabrics with MOLLE “holes”).  MOLLE is short for “Modular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment”.  The whole purpose of the MOLLE system is for attachment of external gear and pouches.  If Brand A has a MOLLE pack, you should be able to put accessories on from Brand B, Brand X, onto infinity.  It’s a standard that brands follow worldwide.  MOLLE is awesome because you can build out your pack based on what you’re doing.  A trip to the market versus 10 days in Southeast Asia can make your backpack look wildly different.  MOLLE webbing can also be on the inside of a pack for organizing less used gear or expensive gear that you want to keep on the interior.

Comfort:

Many brands have their own proprietary suspension system to transfer weight from your shoulders down to your hips.  They’re all genius in their own ways.  Some rely just on super comfortable shoulder straps, which is fine if you don’t plan to load out your pack with tons of weight.  While I have my favorites, I have my own body type and preferences.  So this one requires a bit of legwork on your end.  Try on the packs, see if you can load them down with weight, and have a feel.  Find what works best for you for your requirements, body type, and comfort preferences.

Access:

How do you get into the pack and its compartments?  Is there one massive cavernous compartment?  Are there a few smaller easy-to-access zippered pockets to store your small gadgets?  Is it a clamshell that opens to expose everything inside?  Does it have a 3-ZIP (Tri-Zip) style opening?  There are pros and cons to all of these.  I lean towards a full clamshell opening and Tri-Zip myself, as I find they provide excellent and easy access to everything inside.  Rolltops provide a large main compartment but can be a bit cumbersome when you’re armpit deep in your pack’s opening that looks like a largemouth bass’s mouth, trying to get your fingertips on a Tic Tac mint you dropped at the very bottom.

Country of Manufacture:

This is one tough nut to crack.  And I’m going to set the record straight here.  Some folks swear by Made In USA packs.  Some folks want a pack that’s manufactured in their own country.  Some folks don’t care.  The simple answer is…it doesn’t matter.  Yes, I said it.  I know some factories in Vietnam that are MUCH better at making packs than dozens of USA factories.  On the inverse, I know some USA factories that are better than Vietnamese factories.  For the US military, it is a requirement that the packs be made in the USA (via the Berry Amendment).  So unless you’re an actual enlisted soldier, this shouldn’t matter to you.  Because in that case, you’re being issued your gear anyway.  It really depends on the pride that each individual factory and each individual sewer puts into their product.

Aesthetics:

Yes, I talked about how military/tactical packs are made for function.  They are.  But you’re more than likely a civilian walking around on urban city streets.  So this is really up to you.  How loud do you want to be?  These packs are visually covered in MOLLE webbing which translates to “military” to most onlookers, whether they realize why or not.  Most of these packs come in my favorite color, black.  In my opinion, black is the best way to rock a tactical pack without shouting “military”!  But they also come in a variety of other colors and camouflage patterns.  A subdued olive drab green can look super handsome and MultiCam (or MultiCam black) can be fun too.  Just think about this before you commit to the purchase.  Even with my all-black Triple Aught Design FAST Pack Litespeed, I’ll have people casually ask me when/where I served while I’m in the security line at airports.

Additionally, do you like Velcro patches?  These are generally called “morale patches”.  Inspired from actual armed forces with a civilian spin on them.  Some people think they’re cool and funny.  Some think they’re tacticool.  There are hundreds of manufacturers of fun and serious patches to adorn your pack.  Depending on which vibe you’re going for, look for a panel or strip of female/loop Velcro on the exterior of the pack.  Some brands even offer packs in Velcro-less options, to maximize your “gray man” status.  Check out some morale patches from our friends over at ITS Tactical.

What will YOU be using your Tactical Backpack for?

Now that we’ve knocked out the basics, what exactly do you have planned for yourself?  What expectations do you have from your pack?  Do you want a pack that is designed to go to war, knowing that you will only carry your laptop and office supplies to the office?  That’s totally fine.  But it’s different than someone who might be using a tactical pack solely for GORUCK Challenges.  When it comes down to it, if you’ve checked off all the boxes above, it really comes down to Volume and Organization.

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

Volume:

Generally speaking, 15-26 liters is what most people are looking for in an EDC (everyday carry) style pack for an even mix of office use, light hikes, coffee shop runs, errand running, and 1-3 day trips.  So if this is your sweet spot, then focus on a pack that has 15-26 liters.  Though some may want upwards to 30 liters for their EDC.

Mystery Ranch ASAP Backpack

But if you want a tactical pack to travel the world with or go hiking for 3 weeks on end, a larger volume is obviously better.  More gear = more volume.  There are many schools of thought here; some can handle as low as 26 liters for these epic voyages, but most will want 30-60 liters.  That really depends on you, your practice of minimalism versus hoarding, your gear, and your activity.

Arc'teryx LEAF Assault 30

Organization:

Here’s what really makes a pack “for you” or not.  In the past, I used to love more pockets, more zippers, more hidden compartments.  I could fit X into this pocket, then Y into this separate area, and then Z into its own compartment.  The thing is, separate pockets and compartments mean extra construction = extra cost, extra material/hardware = extra weight/cost, and it takes some impressive memory skills if you swap out packs as often as I do.

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

Personally I lean more towards Inception Packing, with multiple visually recognizable organizer pouches.  I prefer one large compartment for bulky items with maybe 1 (maybe 2) extra pockets for small stuff that I want to access quickly.  That’s what I like in my setup.  And I recommend this for most.

But maybe you like having one pack that you don’t swap out.  So this is where dedicated pocketing can be intriguing for some.  Just remember, gear advances in technology.  Gear grows and shrinks in size depending on technology.  So that pocket for an iPhone 4 definitely won’t fit the new iPhone 8 Plus.  In this case, try fitting some of your must-have gear in the pack before committing.

Tactical EDC Backpack Recommendations:

Mystery Ranch ASAP ($245)

Mystery Ranch ASAP

There was no chance this wasn’t making the list.  We write about this one a lot (example one and example two).  This one hits all of the marks in flying colors, with the 3-ZIP access, made in USA, from 500D Cordura nylon fabric, using YKK zippers and ITW hardware, and one super comfortable Futura Yoke suspension, made by one of the most trusted brands on earth with one of the best reputations for quality ever.

Mystery Ranch ASAP

It has one large compartment and one top zipper for accessories.  I’ve used this pack traveling the world and still can’t believe it’s only 15 liters.  When necessary, I’ve added external MOLLE pouches on the exterior to fit even more gear.  If you like this pack, but don’t care about MOLLE and don’t care about Made in USA, you can get the stripped down version (the Urban Assault) for only $139!

Triple Aught Design FAST Pack Litespeed ($245)

Image may be NSFW.

Triple Aught Design FAST Pack Litespeed

You get a whole lot of pack for the price here, as you can see here.  Made in the USA with 1000D Cordura nylon and so much modularity, it’s practically a Transformer.  It’s a bit larger, coming in at 22 liters.  With a full clamshell opening, you’ll have access to all your gear you shove in there too.  This one also checks all the boxes with YKK zippers, ITW hardware, a HDPE frame sheet to make it comfortable, and so much more.

Triple Aught Design FAST Pack Litespeed

I’ve seen photos of these packs loaded up for serious excursions, but also stripped down to be super slick and clean.  Whatever your preference may be, this pack can adapt to you.  Likely the “smartest” pack on this list, if that makes sense.  Additionally, TAD makes my favorite MOLLE pouch/accessory which mates perfectly with the FPL backpack; the OP1 (available here, review here).

GORUCK GR1 ($295)

Image may be NSFW.

GORUCK GR1

Yep, you knew this one would be on here.  The cult classic…the GORUCK GR1.  Now also coming in at a slightly smaller 21 liters, this size is nearly perfect for EDC (versus the slightly larger original at 26 liters).  It also comes in my favorite color, black.  Back when this pack was first released, it only came in black, which I thought was super rad.  1000D Cordura nylon stitched together in the USA makes this pack a favorite for durability.

GORUCK GR1

It has one massive main compartment with some mesh organization/pockets in there and then one simple zippered pocket on the outside.  The dream layout in my opinion.  What’s nice about this pack is there are (only) 3 rows of MOLLE webbing for attaching additional pouches.  Minimal but functional.

Arc’teryx LEAF Assault Pack 30 ($379)

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.
Arc’teryx LEAF Assault Pack 30

Both the most expensive and largest (30 liters) pack on this list from Arc’teryx’s LEAF (Law Enforcement and Armed Forces) division, but it definitely deserves to be here.  The renamed Khard 30, now called the Assault Pack 30.  The silhouette of this is just magic.  But it’s not all looks here.  This pack is made from 500D Cordura HT (high tenacity) nylon fabric, with YKK zippers, and ITW hardware.  Removable hipbelt and aluminum frame stays for full suspension customization.  I love the access and organization here.

Image may be NSFW.

Arc’teryx LEAF Assault Pack 30

A full “3D clamshell” gives you deep unobstructed access to everything inside.  Female/loop Velcro inside for attachment of modular pouches and pods.  Two side zippered pockets and a top lid pocket for organizing small items.  Thin vertical MOLLE webbing allows you to attach gear to the outside, but it doesn’t actually look like MOLLE which is nice to blend in.  Speaking of blending in, Arc’teryx spent a whole lot of time on their “wolf” colorway, which blends into almost all urban environments.  Hello, Gray man.

Prometheus Design Werx S.H.A.D.O. ($260)

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.
Prometheus Design Werx S.H.A.D.O.

Love the lines and the access of this pack.  While it is a bit larger at 28 liters, some may want that extra space.  It’s got all the checkmarks, without looking overly tactical.  That’s probably because they’re using the MOLLE in a tactful manner, vertically down the shoulder straps.  Rather than use MOLLE on the rear-facing exterior, they have elastic cordage for additional storage, with nylon loops to attach gear to.

Prometheus Design Werx S.H.A.D.O.

Optional super comfortable padded hipbelt.  500D Cordura nylon, YKK zippers, made in the USA (California specifically).  This has the silhouette of an outdoor pack with all the features of a military pack.  We dig this pack.

Vertx EDC Gamut ($199)

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.
Vertx EDC Gamut

Like the previous pack, this one can fill up 28 liters without a problem.  This is a really clever pack on the list, almost a “best of” all the packs here.  It has a “3D clamshell” that opens flat similar to the Assault Pack 30, giving you uninhibited access to a large main compartment as well as a built-in admin pocket towards the top.  This has loads of Velcro on the inside, for the attachment of modular pouches for organization.

Image may be NSFW.

Vertx EDC Gamut

One thing you’ll notice is that there are no MOLLE webbing strips visible on this pack…but I did mention this is a clever pack.  You simply pull down on a discreet loop on the front outside and the entire panel drops down to expose several rows of MOLLE that will give you endless setups.  While they only list “nylon” for the materials (the other details are also mysteriously left off), this example makes up for it with loads and loads of organization/features and great reviews from die-hard fans.

5.11 Tactical RUSH12 ($99)

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.
5.11 Tactical RUSH12

A budget level pack that is packed (pun) with a load of features seen in some of the pricier options above.  While it’s not made with genuine Cordura nylon and it is made in Asia (if that matters to you), it is indeed made with 1000D nylon to take some serious abuse.

Image may be NSFW.

5.11 Tactical RUSH12

High-quality and beefy YKK zippers are present.  And while I prefer the minimalistic compartments, this one boasts 16 individual compartments, including a fleece-lined sunglasses pocket.  It will swallow up to 24 liters of EDC gear.  Definitely a solid contender for under a bill.

Maxpedition Falcon-II ($109)

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.
Maxpedition Falcon-II

While I’m not a fan of this pack when at full price ($179), it generally can be found for much less ($109 or lower).  At its retail MSRP, you’re just too close to some serious packs to justify saving $30-$40.  But at that lower price point, it is definitely a contender.

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.
Maxpedition Falcon-II

It uses off-brand 1050 ballistic nylon fabric, YKK zippers, and Duraflex hardware to keep things going strong.  This one also has several pockets, so if that is your particular thing, you might dig this option.

In Conclusion…

Sure, none of us will be storming Normandy (thankfully because of those who did before).  Most of us will beat up our gear along adventures, travels, daily life, and more.  And for those customers who demand the best, we can use these rugged, durable, and modular tactical packs that were directly inspired from military gear that is designed for the harshest of all conditions.

So now that we’ve covered the basics of Tactical EDC Packs, what do you think?  What’s your vibe?  Are you thinking a subdued black colorway is your thing?  Or do you lean towards the MultiCam camouflage pattern?  Will you strap MOLLE organizer pouches all over the exterior or interior based on different activities?  This list of suggested packs is nowhere close to near a complete list of everything out there; what are some of your favorite Tactical EDC Packs that aren’t listed here?

Workout Essentials: What to Pack for the Gym

When you want to train hard, quality gear will back you up to help you get the most out of your workout. So what makes an awesome workout essential? We’ve done the heavy lifting with our handy guide below on what to pack for the gym…

Bags

A quality gym bag should be able to go beyond your workout environment. Backpacks and duffels should work well for the office too, whilst being large enough to swallow all your gym and work gear. That way, you just need to carry one bag, which means less hassle and makes it easier to fit in a workout before or after work or during your lunch break.

The bag should have sufficient space to store shoes (ideally separately to protect the rest of your gear). And if it offers additional storage for separating smelly gear, even better. Good access and organization is also important to avoid rummaging, especially if you’re carrying both work and gym supplies. Check out a couple of solid options below.

Aer Gym Duffel 2 (US$ 170)

Additionally, the stylish silhouette slides easily between work and workout environments.

And for more options check out this buyer’s guide to the best gym bags around.

Apparel

Having functional exercise apparel can make a big difference to your workout. Look for sweat wicking properties, good ventilation, and suitable stretch to keep you comfortable and flexible during your session. Additionally, try to opt for pieces that work outside of the gym too. That way, you get more out of your gear and ultimately better value for money. Pieces just like those below.

The 10 Best Durable ‘Buy it for Life’ Bag Brands

Cheaply made and designed for obsolescence. Unfortunately far too many products fall into these categories. Sure, they may not cost a lot of money, but after having to replace them for the tenth time, that initial bargain isn’t such a bargain anymore. Even worse, these kinds of products often end up in landfills when they’re thrown away.

But some brands choose to push back against this type of design and manufacturing. Instead they create products that are made to last for years to come, serving you reliably while also helping the planet out. The longer you use an item, the longer it stays out of a landfill, and if it can be put to good use through recycling afterwards, even better. So what makes a bag brand a  ‘Buy it for Life’ brand? Here’s a few criteria they should be nailing:

Materials

A solid foundation is key when you’re building, and for bags that comes down to materials. There’s no point in spending countless hours on meticulous craftsmanship when your materials can’t hack it. If you want a quality product, you have to start with quality materials. Yes, they’ll cost more than cheap ones. But they’ll also stand up to a lot more abuse and ultimately pay for themselves in durability and not having to replace them frequently.

Build quality

So you’ve got good materials, but does the build quality respect those materials? Making a bag properly takes time and care, considering how it will be used and building it in a way that will ensure it’s up to the task. Is it reinforced at the stress points? Is the sewing tidy and reliable? Can you wear this bag without any worries that it will fall apart at the first sign of a heavy load or navigating life’s bumps and scrapes? If so, you’re onto a winner.

Tom Bihn

Practical and timeless design

One of the key elements to a Buy For Life bag is practical and timeless design. Will it be useful and look good not only when it’s new but also many years down the line, when it’s heavily used and worn in? If you’re going to keep and use a bag for a long time, it has to offer functionality and aesthetics that will shrug off trends and stand the test of time.

Warranty

A bag that’s built to last should have a warranty to back that up. If a brand offers you a lifetime warranty, you know they’re confident about the quality of their gear, so you can be too. However, sometimes faults in materials or craftsmanship do crop up, and a good warranty should cover these. Ideally the brand should also encourage repair over replacement, as often a bag will still have many years of good service left to give following a repair.

Keep in mind though, nothing is made to last forever. Bags will eventually come to the end of their reasonably expected lifetimes. So when a brand offers a lifetime guarantee, they’re referring to the lifetime of the bag, not yours! That being said, some bags are just that tough to become heirloom pieces that will be enjoyed by multiple generations.

So with that in mind, we’ve rounded up 10 ‘Buy it for Life’ bag brands that are well deserving of the title…

GORUCK

“I received the repaired GR1 exactly a week after GORUCK received it which was a very impressive turnaround. Hidden inside the ruck were a few awesome goodies including a note, some koozies, and some patches. Patagonia

“One day, I came home from work and found a brand new Patagonia raincoat hanging on the rack. My boyfriend had taken my old one to the local Patagonia store and showed the salesperson the lining. To my disbelief, she swapped it out for the new model of my now-very-old coat. It’s the little things that make a big difference.” – Melissa Nyman.

“I’ve used my Osprey Escapist backpack literally every day for the past 18 years. Only had to send it in once and they had it repaired and returned to me in a week. I’d like to say I’ll buy from them again, but at this rate I doubt I’ll ever have to.” – coldcoast.

Arc’teryx

“Just had a 10+ year old Theta AR hardshell (that had been through hell and back, including a tear in the Goretex proshell) replaced under warranty, free of charge with no questions asked, because they could not repair the delamination that had occurred. Hoping this one lasts another 10 years. Yes, their products come at a premium, but you also get the reassurance of Arc’teryx standing behind their high quality products. Well worth it, imo.” – turboboost.

Chrome Industries

“Chrome makes great bags. I use a backpack for commuting and one of the shoulder straps was coming apart at the seam. I thought I would have to ship it to California for repair and go without a backpack for weeks. I called the Chrome Hub in Portland and they said they could fix it right there on site. And they gave me a loaner bag, same style as the one I was having repaired. Great service.” – Andy C.

Filson

“I had a large duffel that the zipper tape came away from the leather on after 20 years. I probably paid 175 for it. I sent it to them and they said that they didn’t make that anymore and couldn’t repair it. I was out of luck. Just kidding, they gave me 325 in credit for a new one since it was a discontinued model. I got the one that rolls now for some extra dollars. I have probably lost more Filson gear than most will ever own, but if you can hang on to it you will have it for life. Excellent company through and through.” – idontcarethatmuch.

Packing List: The GORUCK Tough Event

GORUCK make some of the toughest carry gear around. But they also offer grueling events, ideal places to put your gear and yourself to the test. Think a lot of pain, but a lot of gain too. GORUCK events are a challenge, but they’re also an opportunity to make new friends and push yourself beyond your previous limits. Having the right gear though is crucial to help you successfully complete the events. So we reached out to Brian Lohr, founder of All Day Ruckoff, to share his packing list for a GORUCK Tough event…

When I graduated college in 2011, I wanted to find something to train for so I wouldn’t get out of shape. While in school I had the luxury of a newly renovated gym at my disposal and would find myself there once or twice a day. When I graduated that privilege disappeared and I didn’t want that, along with starting a new job, to get me out of shape.

I searched the Internet for months and stumbled upon something called the GORUCK Challenge. I registered for the event, bought a GORUCK GR1, and started training for what I thought would be my “summer event” and that would be it. Was I ever wrong.

Six years later I have completed dozens of GORUCK events and never would have guessed that this is where I would be. I run All Day Ruckoff which is one of the largest websites dedicated to rucking and have the All Day Ruckoff Podcast which is the only podcast (as of writing this) on the topic of rucking.

The first event I ever completed was GORUCK Challenge Class 053 in Seattle so it seems only fair that this article is how to pack for a GORUCK Challenge aka the GORUCK Tough. There may be some lingo specific to the rucking community, so I recommend checking out the All Day Ruckoff GORUCK & Rucking Glossary if there are any words you aren’t familiar with.

The GORUCK Tough Event

The GORUCK Tough event is a 10 to 12-hour team endurance challenge. Everyone who registers (and shows up) is on the same team and the GORUCK Cadre (the person or persons leading the event) provide you with challenges. Most GORUCK Tough events involve a lot of PT, 15 to 20 miles of rucking, and you’ll probably end up in the water at some point. These events are not easy which is one of its draws…it’s not often you get to truly push yourself and this is a great way to do that.

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.
GORUCK Tough packing list

Because of the style and intensity of the event it’s important to square your gear away well in advance. You will have a hard enough time with the physical aspects alone…you don’t need your gear working against you too. With that in mind I’ve put together this GORUCK Tough packing list so that if you do decide to take the plunge and register you can show up prepared with at least the right gear.

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.
GORUCK Tough packing list

Before we get going I want to mention that I bought all of this gear at retail pricing. None of this was given to me to promote in any way which hopefully says something about my recommendations.

Required Gear

There are two types of gear lists here: Required and Recommended. Required is gear that you need to show up to the event with or your team will get so smoked with PT (exercises) that it will only be funny for those watching…which won’t be you. The following is the required gear and it is of the utmost importance that you bring it all.

Backpack aka Ruck (GORUCK Rucker)

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.
GORUCK Tough packing list

You need a backpack to participate in a GORUCK event and you want one that will not fail. There’s (almost) nothing more difficult to watch than someone with a backpack falling apart halfway through an event and you don’t want that person to be you.

The best way for me to relate how important a good backpack is for these events is to compare it to running. Let’s say you sign up for a marathon, train for 3 to 4 months, then race day comes and you toe the line wearing crocs. If you’re a runner then this will sound absurd to you…which is the level of absurdity I feel when people show up to a GORUCK event with an inadequate backpack. Does that mean you need a GORUCK pack? Absolutely not. But it does mean you should not bring a $10 Walmart special.

The GORUCK Rucker is built for these events and is fairly affordable when looking at the competition. The Rucker in the above picture has seen hundreds of miles of rucking and a solid number of GORUCK Light and GORUCK Tough events. It’s still living a happy life and I have no concerns using it at events. It’s a little dirty because I use it solely for rucking and don’t clean it anymore but if I had spent five minutes cleaning it I guarantee you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between it and a brand new one. You’ll have enough things to worry about during the event…you don’t need your gear breaking to be one of them.

Weight (GORUCK Ruck Plate)

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.
GORUCK Tough packing list

You need to bring weight to carry in your backpack which is why I recommended a high-quality backpack above. If you’re under 150 lbs you bring 20 lbs and if you’re over 150 lbs you bring 30 lbs. If you’re equal to 150 pounds then go use the restroom and weigh yourself again. There’s a few options for meeting the weight requirement: a plate, bricks, or sand. I don’t recommend sand because when it gets wet it gets heavier. Bricks were the original requirement when GORUCK first started off so they’re “fun” to use but they do take up a bit of space. Ruck Plates are great because they meet the requirement and don’t take up much space at all.

Hydration Bladder (Source 3L)

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.
GORUCK Tough packing list

The GORUCK Tough is a 10 to 12-hour long event and you will need to drink water during it. I’ve used the same 3L Source Hydration Bladder for four years and it has held up wonderfully. It’s what GORUCK recommends and it is what has worked for me.

1L Water Bottle (Nalgene 1L)

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.
GORUCK Tough packing list

New to the “Required Gear List” is a 1L water bottle. Nalgene makes a tough lightweight water bottle called the Tritan so it was the easy choice here. Everything you bring you will need to carry with you so consider that before you reach for a metal water bottle. The one in the picture has a PACElid on it. They’re cool but not necessary to the event.

Reflective Ruck Bands (HVS-V or Ruck Bands)

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.
GORUCK Tough packing list

You need reflective bands on your ruck. These became required gear after the GORUCK community tragically lost Jeff Proietti back in 2014 at an event when he was struck by a car. It was a horrible accident and one that the community will never forget…there’s even a yearly memorial event for it. Grab either the HVS-V from All Day Ruckoff or the Ruck Bands. You can’t go wrong with either.

Headlamp (NiteRider Adventure Headlamp or Something Cheap)

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.
GORUCK Tough packing list

99% of GORUCK Tough events start at night and end in the morning which means you’re out all night. The headlamp is essential gear because you need to see where you’re going. There’s a chance the Cadre will lead you through the woods, to parks, or through parts of town with no street lamps. You need to be able to see and you need to be able to use your hands at all times and a headlamp makes that possible. I bring my NiteRider Adventure Headlamp but have had great success with $15 headlamps on Amazon. Don’t splurge here…I used that Streamlight for numerous events and it’s a fine headlamp.

Pro Tip: Get one that has a red filter on it so you don’t blind your team looking around.

Photo ID

You need to bring photo identification with you to the event.

$20 Cash

This is routinely called “quitters cash” and is necessary in case you decide to quit and need to take a cab home. This is one of those items that Cadre hope you forget so they can beat you down with PT. Don’t forget to bring $20 in cash please…for the love of your team.

Windbreaker*

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.
GORUCK Tough packing list

You will want to bring a windbreaker no matter what because there’s a great chance that you will end up in the water during your GORUCK Tough event. The windbreaker will do its job and block that wind so you don’t freeze when you get out of whatever body of water you were unlucky enough to end up in at 4 in the morning. Grab a packable windbreaker like mine so you can store it nicely in your ruck. The brand doesn’t really matter…you’re going to sweat like crazy in it and it will never stop smelling like grass if you end up in a park during your event.

* The windbreaker is only required if temps will drop below 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

Recommended Gear

Recommended gear is not required but it is stuff that I definitely bring to every single GORUCK event I participate in. To me this is required gear but GORUCK won’t smoke you if you don’t bring it so it falls under recommended gear.

Gloves (Mechanix)

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.
GORUCK Tough packing list

Bring gloves. If you bring nothing else in the “Recommended Gear” section please make sure you bring gloves. You will be doing push-ups on concrete, bear crawls down steps, crab walks in a park, your hands will see countless horrors and you will want to protect them. You also use your hands to put food in your mouth so keeping them as protected as possible to prevent yourself from accidentally eating whatever you crawled through during that last park. I have used Mechanix Gloves for all but one of my events and they’ve been great.

Bladder Hose Retention System (GrimLoc)

Image may be NSFW.

GORUCK Tough packing list

“Bladder hose retention system” is a fancy way of saying something that will prevent your bladder hose from flopping all over the place. A GrimLoc only costs a few bucks and it will save you a ton of frustration by securing your bladder hose.

Secondary Handle (Reflective Padded Handle)

Image may be NSFW.

The secondary handles are great for overhead presses and using if you lose strap privileges. I sell the handles on my website so I won’t say too much about these. If you’re interested in what others think you can check out the reviews. The handle in the above picture has been in use for years, is still going strong, and never leaves my pack.

Food

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.
GORUCK Tough packing list

Food isn’t on the required packing list but your class is not stopping for dinner or breakfast anywhere until the event ends. That means 10 to 12 hours where you will need to provide yourself with enough food to keep going. I find that six protein bars is more than enough to get myself through an event. Usually I’ll only eat four of them and either save or give the last two away in the event someone else needs food. I don’t have a strong recommendation here except to say that I bring Costco protein bars which are a near clone of the Quest bars. Every stomach is different so figure out what works for you (eat a bar then do a workout or go for a run) and make sure it doesn’t upset your stomach.

Dry Bag (USMC Military SealLine MAC Sack Waterproof Dry Bag)

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.
GORUCK Tough packing list

You’re bringing food, a windbreaker, and maybe a spare pair of gloves to the event. There’s a great chance you’ll end up at some point in the water. You need that stuff to stay dry until it’s time to use it. Don’t eat lake water protein bars and get sick. Bring a dry bag and put your essentials in it so that they’ll stay dry. I love my USMC Dry Bag because it keeps water out and also lets air out so it stores nicely. It’s fairly cheap and mine has been through a dozen events and still works perfectly.

Pelican Case (Pelican 1120 Case)

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.
GORUCK Tough packing list

I bring my 1120 Pelican Case with me to every event and keep my phone and my watch in there. I like to have my phone with me so that at the end of the event I can tell my wife everything is okay and I like to have my Garmin Fenix 5X so that it can track our route for the event. Watches are not permitted to be worn at GORUCK events so keeping it stashed in there is a safe move.

I often get the question why not the plastic Pelican cases? Short answer: they are water resistant, not waterproof. I have taken those through GORUCK events and they let water in. I could always toss them in a dry bag but that’s just another item…the 1120 case is nearly indestructible and I just don’t have to worry about it.

Second Hydration Mouthpiece

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.
GORUCK Tough packing list

Last on the list is a second mouthpiece for your hydration system. If for some reason you lose the one on your hose it’s nice to have a spare. I know this because I lost one once and it sucked. Now I carry a spare so I can laugh at fate if it ever decides to take one of my mouthpieces again.

Final Notes

The GORUCK Tough event can honestly be tough but you shouldn’t make it harder on yourself by bringing subpar gear or not bringing the right equipment. Trust me…when you are six hours into an event you will be hating yourself for skimping on your gear. Thanks for reading and I hope this list helps you prepare for your GORUCK Tough event.

GORUCK GR2: Video Review

YOMP NOTES: GORUCK GR1 Rucksack EDC

Blacksmithing, snowboarding, mountain biking, digital design, trekking and gear. Neil Stevens is a man with diverse experience and interests, but his love for the outdoors has always been a constant throughout his life. Neil’s blog YOMP NOTES is dedicated to sharing his outdoor adventures. Not to mention his passion for creating tailored carry setups to get the job done. And when it comes to his EDC, a GORUCK GR1 is the pack that makes that happen. But it’s the partnership between this rugged pack and carefully selected accessories that really delivers the efficiency and adaptability that Neil requires.

Neil kindly allowed us to republish that setup below, in all its gear-filled glory…

An EDC (Every Day Carry) can be all kinds of things to all sorts of people. It is the gear we carry every day. Our keys, phone, a knife, maybe a torch, another knife and so on.

Some carry this equipment in their pockets, others in organized zip-around pouches and others in their rucksacks. That’s me, that’s what I do, I carry in my rucksack because I tried the others and for me, a rucksack works best.

WHAT RUCKSACK FOR MY EDC?

GORUCK GR1 – JUST THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF BOXY COOL AND MOLLE, UTILITY CHIC

YOMP NOTES

PACKED UP AND READY FOR SCHOOL : ) TODAY I’M USING A GORUCK FIELD POCKET (Sml) FOR MY DSLR

So after several weeks of research I decided upon the GORUCK GR1 21L. My pack would have to fit several criteria. Its aesthetic would have to work in quite formal professional situations as well as down the pub and for me, the GORUCK does just that. Just the right amount of formal boxy cool and MOLLE utility chic make the GORUCK design just right for my EDC. There are many videos and blog posts about the GORUCK, so here I’m going to talk about what I did inside this rucksack to really make it hum for me.

INTERNAL MOLLE

Image may be NSFW.

YOMP NOTES

GORUCK GR1 INTERNAL, INTEGRAL MOLLE FIELD IS KEY TO CUSTOMISING OUR GORUCK EDC

The GORUCK GR1 has 6 columns x 3 rows of MOLLE that are integral to the rucksack’s design. A slight issue is that it doesn’t fit the usual NATO spec for MOLLE i.e. 2.00″ instead of the standard 1.5″ wide? I think I get why this is. In theory it makes it easier to weave MOLLE-enabled pouches into this ladder but in reality, it means some pouches won’t fit unless you position them left or right; central is quite awkward.

YOMP NOTES

CUSTOM SILENT ZIPPER PULLS TO FALL IN WITH GORUCK STANDARDS

However this internal MOLLE is a great enabler, allowing us to customize the rucksack in any which way we like. The genius is it gives us enough features without trying to second guess what we want but gives enough options to achieve exactly what we need. As I said, the GR1 gives us enough so that we are asked to think and be creative with just how we want the rucksack to work for us. Was this judgement on the part of the GORUCK designers or just luck? At the end of the day I don’t care, all I know is I like it a lot.

MY GORUCK EDC INTERNAL CONFIG

For me this EDC is all about the interior. To the untrained eye, the outside of the rucksack is quite neutral but the inside? That we can have some fun with. I had an idea as to how I would need the bag to work for me. I would need an easy-access pocket at the top, where I can keep pens, light tools, notebooks etc. I would need a pocket for my phone and somewhere to carry my morning coffee. Wallet and business cards could go in the top front pocket of the rucksack.

YOMP NOTES

LOVE IT WHEN KIT TAKES ON A LIFE OF ITS OWN, AS HERE, USING MOLLE FOR PENS AND TORCHES

First aid, earphones and cables and chargers could go in the bottom mesh pocket. The outside slant pocket is where my keys would go. You may have noticed that in every case, I haven’t stuffed pockets with kit! I’ve done this in the past, seeing my EDC as a suitcase that should be packed! This time I wanted my bag to be able to carry my everyday useful items and still have plenty of room to carry my jacket should I get too warm or the shopping or extra work files etc.

YOMP NOTES

A NICE VIEW OF ZONE 2 BRINGING BACK THE SHOPPING – I LIKE SOUP

So I see the main compartment of the bag as having 4 zones of carry: x2 organized pockets at the top. A free zone underneath for general duties and behind the RIP for large A4, 15.4″ laptop-sized items.

USING THE RIP AS A HATCH TO ZONE 4 – MAGAZINES, LAPTOPS AND WORK FILES GO HERE

I have deliberately left these last two zones empty, ready for when I need them. I’ve been using this config for several months now and for me it works well.

ZONE 3 BEING USED FOR SPARE CLOTHING, IN THIS CASE, MY BERGHAUS GORE-TEX JACKET

I’ve tried several options here and I may well try others in the future but for now, I have settled on this configuration:

YOMP NOTES

EARLY VARIANTS FOR ZONES 1-2 IN MOST CASES, FAR TOO FINICKY

All attached to a Grey Man Tactical Rigid Insert Panel or RIP if you’re in the trade (I’ll get to that in a bit) is a Maxpedition AUP pouch, Vanquest Hydra Bottle Holder and attached to the front of that is a Maxpedition PHP. The all-important, dedicated pocket for my phone. For me this solution works really well. The AUP is for my tools, pens, notebooks etc., all easy to reach at the top of the bag should it be on the floor, maybe resting against my chair in the office.

YOMP NOTES

ZONE 1-2 IN DAILY USE. NOTE THAT MY COFFEE BOTTLE IS SWUNG FROM A CARABINER. SOMETIMES IT’S JUST EASIER TO CARRY IT THIS WAY

These new additions to the Maxpedition AGR line are perfect and could have been designed for this exact purpose. This doesn’t happen very often but when it does, I really enjoy it. Next to this, the Vanquest Hydra Bottle Holder keeps my morning coffee or tea easy to reach and upright.

YOMP NOTES

A USEFUL SHOT OF THE VANQUEST HYDRO BOTTLE POUCH, CINCHED UP WHEN NOT IN USE. THIS SHOT IS PRE CUSTOM ZIPPER PULLS

This is a very well designed piece of kit. It has a shockcord lace system so it can be adjusted for different-sized bottles or even other kit, such as auxiliary power sources (batteries) and even one time, a solid state external hard drive, very useful. I use the AUP front MOLLE panel for need-to-grab items such as my everyday pen, a small torch and from time to time charger cables kept in order with a couple of Web Dominators.

THE RIP

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.
YOMP NOTES

TWIN SIDE CLIPS USED TO ATTACH THE GREY MAN RIP

As I mentioned earlier in this piece the GORUCK has an internal MOLLE field which is great but for me, if used as intended, would restrict the use of the bag. And bearing in mind the issues stated earlier about the MOLLE’s non-standard, non-NATO layout I had to think of something which quickly presented itself as the Grey Man Tactical Rigid Insert! I’ve used MOLLE inserts before with my day hike rucksack but for me the Rigid Insert had an advantage.

1. Looking very clean, neat and tidy and yet just the right amount badass.

2. It’s rigid which means your equipment has a firm foundation, which means that zipping and unzipping pockets one-handed is much easier, which is very useful when reaching for something or in a line at a check-out.

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.
YOMP NOTES

CLIPPED UP AND READY TO GO

The RIP is attached to the GORUCK’s internal MOLLE via 2 ITW side lock buckles. As I write this, I’m not sure if this is the best way for me to swing the RIP but for now this is how I’m doing it. This allows me to unclip the RIP easily from above with one hand, enabling me to slide larger items behind it such as a laptop sleeve, files or mags. Alternatively the buckles and straps can be adjusted to allow for larger (fatter) kit while remaining clipped in.

Image may be NSFW.

YOMP NOTES

LAPTOP ACCESS FROM BEHIND THE GREY MAN RIP. ONE-HANDED OPERATION WHILE SAT AT A DESK

So what’s with the quick release? This is an advantage in two main situations:

1. To quickly unclip to slide items behind it.

2. To unclip and remove the RIP entirely, leaving the bag empty and ready for another mission, where all the space is needed and my everyday gear isn’t.

YOMP NOTES

IN CONCLUSION – THE GORUCK GR1 ENABLES US

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.
YOMP NOTES

The GORUCK GR1 enables us to customize the interior so we can carry exactly as we wish, without lots of extra straps and fuss. As well as its primary purpose of enabling us to carry lots of weight, over long distances, and smile at the end of it.

For me, at home, at work, at a conference, at the beach or on a speed march for charity this rucksack is understated utility chic, a classic example of being more than it seems — and for that I love it.
